The Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks started collecting typewriters in 1978 after he acquired his first, a Hermes 2000. Today he has almost 250 typewriters in his collection, both manual and portable machines dating from the 30s to the 90s. "I would say that 90% of them are in perfect working order" says Hanks in California Typewriter, Doug Nichol's new documentary. His vast collection, which he often shares on his social media pages, consists of vintage models from different countries around the world.
